  4. BLOWN AWAY: THE ROLLING STONES AND THE DEATH OF THE SIXTIES

  9.     "Drowned and wasted" is the way the singer and writer
  10. Marianne Faithfull thought about the death of Brian Jones. He
  11. was the seminal Rolling Stone, the guiding spirit of the band
  12. as well as its original unifying force, but he was done in: by
  13. drugs; by intramural rivalry; by his own musical eccentricity,
  14. a sense of rhythm-and-blues purity that kept him from going
  15. easily along with the kind of flat-out, bleacher-battering rock
  16. that bandmates Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were starting to
  17. write.

  19.     Jones, try as he might, couldn't write a tune. So he was cut
  20. out of the publishing revenues and the limelight. Jagger and
  21. Richards were too formidable for the slight, blond,
  22. increasingly tuned-out guitarist. Jones lost his grip on the
  23. group, and on his own life, and he died on the bottom of the
  24. swimming pool at his English estate, a property once owned by
  25. A.A. Milne, an author who believed in happier endings.

  27.     All this is a matter of record -- indeed, of rock mythology
  28. -- and needs some freshening up for contemporary consumption.
  29. A.E. Hotchner, whose previous forays into biography have
  30. included volumes about Ernest Hemingway, Doris Day and Sophia
  31. Loren, is clearly no rock fan. He dismisses Jagger as "a ruler
  32. with no queen, no jester, no kingdom, just an egocentric bitch
  33. king with a neon scepter sitting on a hollow throne." But
  34. Hotchner does display a certain amount of commercial
  35. calculation, no doubt having sized up the sales receipts of
  36. rock butcher Albert Goldman's biographies of Elvis and John
  37. Lennon, and he comes up with his own cash-register kicker:
  38. Brian Jones was murdered.

  40.     The evidence for this conclusion seems a little . . . well,
  41. marginal; a lawyer might call it pure hearsay. The motive is
  42. class resentment (a couple of lads working on the estate held
  43. Jones in utter contempt), but even Perry Mason might turn into
  44. a loser trying to sell a judge that one. Even if the research
  45. were more solid, Hotchner thinks so little of the Stones and
  46. manifests such indifference to rock that his book creates an
  47. atmosphere that would put anyone, not just a fan, on the
  48. defensive. Hotchner quotes at length from Jagger and Richards,
  49. but they did not cooperate with Blown Away, and their dialogues
  50. have been culled from a variety of sources. That kind of
  51. cut-and-paste job makes for a shaky brief, and a contemptible
  52. book.
